Upon a fellow-employee’s birthday, I thanked her for the cupcakes she neither made nor purchased. She laughed and said, “You’re welcome for being born.”

That’s a good phrase, when you don’t know how to respond during your birthday. Because the celebration of your birth can be a confusing time. Who’s doing what for whom?

I also appreciated her line, “You’re welcome for being born,” because it could be taken generally: A person is immediately welcomed into the world upon his/her birth.

Also, on one’s birthday, you could thank the human for being born. Just be ready for the alternative response: “You’re not welcome.” (Because maybe you’re a creeper and not worthy of celebrating the day.)
