All night, the line rings.

She supposes she exaggerates, like these callers exaggerating their point and dialect. They’re funny like that. Funny accents. She’s not supposed to listen in, but an operator sometimes can’t help herself.

Too, a man telling another man to stay put in a room is plain interesting.

And then what happens?

The line goes dead.

She hopes everyone’s all right and that no one’s in jeopardy. There’s been enough killing with the wars.

Art of war, art of death.

Talk about a disconnect.
