All night, the line rings.

She supposes this is still an exaggeration, like these callers exaggerating their points to death.

Creepy, alarming voices. Caricatures.

The same question between the operator’s working ears: How can she listen without listening in?

Of course, she understands the ethical code. She can – should – disconnect herself from the strange ones. The strange calls. The strange callers.

Too, an old man pranking an old woman is as interesting as that situation where the man with the accent told the other man to stay in a room (which the operator still hopes put no one in jeopardy).

These calls also involve the line going dead. Every call – dead.

And, this time, no one’s called this operator. She’s merely been listening.

Is there another operator, in another dimension, answering the night calls?

Does anyone else hear this?
